As summer nears, families across Florida are heading to pools, beaches, and water parks in greater numbers.
The YMCA is urging locals to practice Phones Down, Eyes Up to prevent tragedies, as drowning remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4.
Last year, the state saw at least 97 child drowning deaths—a powerful reminder that constant, undistracted supervision saves lives.
Experts recommend assigning a specific adult as the Water Watcher during gatherings, rotating every 15 to 20 minutes, and using YMCA’s Water Watcher badge to help kids know whom to approach.
Safety steps also include installing proper pool barriers, self-latching gates, and alarms, along with teaching children to always request permission before getting near water.
The YMCA’s Safety Around Water Pledge encourages families to stay informed, enroll in swim lessons, and make water safety a year-round priority.
Fun and safety can go hand in hand this summer.
