Phones Down, Eyes Up: Commit to Water Safety This Summer

Stay Vigilant to Prevent Drowning Incidents

As summer approaches, families are flocking to pools, beaches, and water parks.

The YMCA emphasizes a crucial message: Phones Down, Eyes Up.

With drowning being the leading cause of death among children aged 1 to 4, it's imperative for parents and caregivers to remain attentive when children are near water.

In 2023, Florida reported at least 97 child drowning deaths, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance.

To enhance water safety, consider the following steps:

1. Phones Down, Eyes Up

Effective supervision is paramount.

Assign a designated adult as a Water Watcher during gatherings.

This individual should avoid distractions like texting or socializing and rotate every 15 to 20 minutes.

The YMCA offers a Water Watcher badge to clearly identify the person on duty, ensuring children know who to approach if needed.

2. Prioritize Protection

Most drownings occur in residential pools.

Implement layers of protection such as four-sided fences, self-latching gates, and alarms around pool access points.

Teach children to always ask for permission before entering the water, regardless of the location.

3. Take the Safety Around Water Pledge

Living in Florida means water is always nearby, making water safety a year-round commitment.

By taking the Safety Around Water Pledge, you commit to staying informed, supervising children without distractions, enrolling them in swim lessons, learning CPR, ensuring proper pool protections, and sharing these tips with others.

Visit your local YMCA to take the pledge and access more safety tips.

Creating fun summer memories should never come at the expense of safety.

YMCA programs like Safety Around Water and Safe Start equip families with life-saving skills.

For more water safety tips or to enroll in swimming lessons, visit your neighborhood YMCA.
